Professor Maria Chomyszyn-Gajewska

Professor Maria Chomyszyn-Gajewska obtained diploma of doctor of dentistry in 1970 after completion of studies at the Dental Faculty of Medical Academy in Warsaw. Professional work on position of assistant she began at the Department of Conservative Dentistry of Medical Academy in Warsaw in 1972, where she worked for two years. In 1974 she began working as assistant at the Department of Conservative Dentistry of Medical Academy in Cracow.
On the basis of paper entitled "Microbiology of dental plaque with special regard of Actinomyces sp." she obtained her phD title in 1979. In 1995, on the ground of scientific achievements, requirements for professorship and submitted paper entitled " Local treatment of advanced periodontitis by the use of Metronidazole " she obtained the title of associate professor in dentistry. In the year 2004 she became full professor.
From 1981 she was staying on position of tutor. Simultaneously she was working at State Clinical Hospital and then at University Dental Clinic. She fulfils duties of ward head, being at the same time on regular scientifically - didactic post at Collegium Medicum of Jagiellonian University. In 2001 she became the Head of the Conservative Dentistry Department.
In 2004, after the structural changes in Dental Insitute, she was appointed the Head of Chair and Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine CMUJ and also ward head of it.
She has qualified as: 1st degree specialist in general dentistry (1976), 2nd degree specialist in conservative dentistry (1979) and 2nd degree specialist in periodontology (1984).

Professor Maria Chomyszyn - Gajewska visited and performed trainings in following Universities:

  • 1 month as a visiting professor at the University of Helsinki in Finland (1987),
  • 1 month training at the University of Würzburg in Germany (1989),
  • 1 month as a visiting professor at the School of Dental Hygienists and at the Dental Faculty of University of Zürich, Switzerland (1991),
  • 2 weeks visit in Charité University in Berlin, Germany (2005),
  • 1 week visit in Witten/Herdecke University, Germany (2005),
  • she obtained British Council Grant and stayed for 1 year in microbiological laboratory at London Hospital Medical College in UK studying the ecological changes in periodontal pockets.

Scientific achievements of Professor Maria Chomyszyn - Gajewska embraces together 158 scientific publications. She published 101 articles in reviewed scientific periodicals. Among them 73 of original works (10 in English and the rest in Polish language). Published works had investigative, epidemiological, casuistical and review character. She is also co-author of a book entitled "Dental Education in Europe" (Dental Press Kft., Budapest 2000), 2 scripts "Conservative Dentistry of Developmental Age" and "Basics of Periodontal and Oral Diseases", which were many times reissued.
She participated in 57 congresses regarding conservative dentistry, periodontology, pediatric dentistry, radiology and biomaterials (22 abroad: Edinburgh, Rostock, Cottbus, Florence, Monte Carlo, Nice, Prague, Montpelier, Munich, Geneva, Warsaw, Rome, Cardiff, Dublin, Kyoto, Mishima, Istambul, Honolulu, Barcelona, Dresden, Athens). She presented 32 oral reports and 25 poster presentations.

Professor Maria Chomyszyn-Gajewska is interested in problems regarding investigations over hard teeth tissues, endodontics, environmental dentistry, functional disorders of mastication system, treatment of periodontal and oral diseases, graduate and postgraduate education.
From 1st September, 1999 to 31st August, 2002 she was a Dean of Dental Subfaculty of Collegium Medicum of Jagiellonian University.
In this time:

  1. she prepared materials and worked out programme of instruction for Dental Subfaculty (in Polish and English)
  2. as member of Dented and Dented - Evolves Programmes, financed by European Union, she worked out the report about dental faculty in English, and organized in October 2000 visitation of it performed by international experts of dentistry. She participated in similar visitations at other universities in Europe.
  3. she prepared and wrote in English report relating undergraduate dental studies for European Union TAIEX inspectors and represented University during this inspection in March 2002 in Ministry of Health in Warsaw.

Professor Maria Chomyszyn-Gajewska was or is a member and participates in following University Committees:

  1. from 1996 to 2000 – University Recruitment Committee,
  2. from 2000 –2004 - Faculty Recruitment Committee,
  3. from year 2000 - Didactics Committee,
  4. from 2000 to 2002 - Clinical Committee,

From 2001 to 2002 she was the member of Acreditation Committee, and from 2001-2005 she was the member of Scientific Advisory Committee at Minister of Health.
She was the lecturer and manager in many specialistic postgradute courses for dentists (regarding oral diseases, periodontal diseases, hard tissues and pulp diseases) at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Diseases of Medical Faculty in Cracow and as well in Kielce and Nowy Sącz. She is taking care of dentists during their specialization training in conservative dentistry and periodontology.
Since 1979 she has been participating in specialization exams committee in Cracow and in Rzeszów (in preceding years also in Przemyśl and in Nowy Sącz), previously as a Medical Chamber delegate and nowadays Collegium Medicum UJ. Since 2002 she is the regional consultant in conservative dentistry with endodontics.
She is promotor of 7 finished phD programmes, several are still in progress, and she is taking care of students from doctorate studies .
She was the director of KBN grant (No 4P05E04113) titled "Investigations on receiving composite -coal membranes in the treatment of periodontal diseases by implantation" and KBN grant (No 4P05E08716) titled „Analysis of occurrences of osteopenia and osteoporosis among patients with periodontitis.". She also participated as main investigator in KBN grant (No 7T08D02114) entitled „Ceramic materials for clinical use in dentistry" conducted by Academy of Mining and Metalurgy. Part of the research within KBN grant resulted in patent UP RP - inventive project (No: P-330977) entitled „Method of production of stratified surgical implants".
At present Professor Maria Chomyszyn-Gajewska directs/takes part in University grants on subject of periodontal and oral mucosa diseases.
She participates also in works of editorial committee of journals: „Czasopismo Stomatologiczne" and „Poradnik Stomatologiczny".
She is a member of following scientific associations: Polskie Towarzystwo Stomatologiczne (since 1980), Polskie Stowarzyszenie Biomateriałów (1996), Akademia Pierre - Fauchard (1989), International Association for Dental Research (1996), Central European Division of IADR (1996), International Academy of Periodontology (1996) and European Federation of Periodontology (1996).
In Cracow's Division of Polish Dental Association she fulfiled different functions: secretary (1985-1989), treasurer (1989-1997), president (1997 -2005).
From 1989 to 1997 she substituted Regional Spokesman of Professional Responsibility at Cracow's Medical Chamber.
She has got many honours and prizes granted for scientific work by rector of Medical Academy and Jagiellonian University, and also Polish Dental Association. She was awarded also with Golden Cross of Merit (2002) and Silver and Gold Honour Badge of Polish Dental Association.
